The second step in transmitting information using the Internet is when the Internet Protocol figures out how the data is to get from point A to point B by passing through a series of routers, which is the same way regular mail passes through several post offices on its way to the recipient (Scotts Newsletter). Every router that receives the data will examine the destination addresses of the packets and will pass the packets on to another router as they make their way to the recipient (Scotts Newsletter). There are different protocols used by the Internet: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and Telnet Protocol.
